Abstract

This paper is a first approach to the study of the origins of mental medicine in Cuba through the theoretical contributions of Gustavo López (1860-1912), considered to be one of the founders of alienism in Cuba. In particular, an assessment is made of the influence of French degenerationism and Italian criminal anthropology on the clinical and forensic praxis of Cuban fin-de-siècle psychiatry, as well as the main characteristics of their doctrines.
