Hospitals and Modernization: The Case of Daughters of Charity in the hospitals of Chile (1850-1900)

This article analyzes the work carried out by the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vicent de Paul in chilean hospitals during the XIX century. Based on the original transcripts and writings of the Vincentians and of hospital regulation, this study arguments that the changes introduced by the religious were fundamental allowing hospitals to be detached from colonial charity and to enter into the parameters established by modern science.
