The "vital lesion" in the nosological thought of G. L. Bayle

The concept of the «specificity of lesions», as formulated in his work on tuberculosis, constitutes the most significant contribution of F. L. Bayle (1774-1816) to the development of anatomicoclinical thought, Bayle's conception of disease also contained certain aspects in which the role of anatomical lesions was-much less important. The object of the present article is to examine the role of the concept of the «vital lesion» in Bayle's nosological thought, which concept took on growing importance, particularly in his posthumous works.
