Abstract

The sugar boom at the end of the eighteenth century in Cuba required the import of a large work force and reduced costs for working in agriculture. Sugarplantation owners and merchants expressed and defended their interests through institutions they created: Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País and the Real Consulado de Agricultura, Industria y Comercio de La Habana. These institutions were the forum for open debate on the tipe of population that would benefit the country most from the economic, cultural and ethnic point of view, with opinions changing according to economic conditions on the island.
