The autor studied the main illnesses afflicting slaves in Havana in an attempt to cover some interesting and little-known aspects of the social history of the colony. Mention is made of the difficulties of collecting data that could give general information on the illnesses and the doubtful knowledge of the «specialists» on some of the ailments of the period. Slave sale contracts are used to extract possible illnesses. After analyzing a substantial sample (4,446 cases) during the period 1580-1699, the most common illnesses are classified and analyzed into the following groups: slaves new arrivals, mestizos and sugar-workers.
