The half-empty bottle: Emilio Huelín, scientific popularization and the Spanish scientific debate during the «Sexenio Revolucionario» and the first years of the Spanish Restauration

This article presents the biography of the mining engineer Emilio Huelín Newmann (Málaga, 1829- Madrid, 1904) and studies his work as a popularizer of science between 1870 and 1876 in La Ilustración Española y Americana (Madrid, 1869-1921) and other publications. Both erudite and polyglot, his work to take science to a wider audience is comparable to that of other European popularizers of the time. In his efforts to vulgarize science, Huelín gave a largely negative image of Spanish science that was to some measure a true reflection of the state of science in Spain. Huelín tried to expand new ideas in Spain to contribute to the social, cultural and economic development of his country
