Abstract

This article offers an overview of some of the key historiographical trends that have marked the history of the visual culture of science in recent decades. We begin by examining some of the themes and methodological approaches that have influenced the research on scientific images. Next, we discuss the role of images in relation to a range of scientific disciplines for which matters of representation and visualization are especially relevant. We conclude with a section dedicated to the individuals that, through their involvement in the production of visual materials, contributed to the development of said disciplines.
