After the Spanish Civil War, during the period of severe economic crisis known as the “autarky”era, the importation of medical-surgical instruments, among many other items, became practically impossible. This favored the appearance of multiple proposals by Spanish professionals to make up for those shortages.
A demonstrative sample of this trend is presented, based on a model of an apparatus for blood transfusions designed by catalan doctor Agustí Amell, together with several other similar and contemporary projects. In order to find out the role played by this technology, research has been carried out based on the use of primary sources (documentation of archives) and medical publications of the time, as well as secondary bibliography for proper contextualization.
