The figure of José Felipe Poey is analyzed as one of the great Cuban naturalists who worked in many fields of knowledge in the nineteenth century. The article focusses on his work in ichthyology in Cuba and is divided into two parts. In the first, the author refers to Poey's study of ciguatera, an illness caused by human ingestion of toxic fish and describes the fish that cause the illness, the number of species, the symptoms, precautions and treatment. Data is given on the toxic species, based on the knowledge of other naturalists like Antonio Parra who had studied this subject. Poey's interest in philology in his analysis of the origin of the work «ciguatera» is also discussed. The second part is concerned with fishing regulations in force in Cuba in his lifetime and gives his opinions on legal aspects of this «Fisheries police», safeguarding the health of consumers without harming this important industry for the island.
