Resumen

Este artículo ofrece una propuesta historiográfica que reflexiona sobre fármacos y patentes y los conflictos entre salud y propiedad que viven las sociedades contemporáneas. Explora los extensos debates que sobre patentes y fármacos hubo desde finales del XIX; a diferencia de lo que ocurre hoy, en Europa no siempre estuvo permitido patentar los productos farmacéuticos. Incorpora un estudio de caso que conecta estrategias de protección y cuestiones éticas sobre las que todavía hoy sigue sin haber consenso. Y concluye con una reflexión en torno a las tensiones entre salud pública y propiedad, y los problemas que, en la actualidad, continúan pendientes y que han hecho de los fármacos y las patentes objetos y sujetos de la geopolítica contemporánea.
