Taking the concept of «whoredom» as a starting point, the process of medicalization of prostitution in Buenos Aires during the two first decades of this century is analyzed. The influence of degenerationism and criminal anthropology on the development of a medico-positivist and somaticist discourse is assessed, as well as the sociological elements incorporated therein, especially as regards the immigration phenomenon and the impact of a hostile urban environment.
