The love of poison. On the symbolic world of Drugs

This article, based on the relevant literary and medical publications during the 19th century and the beginning of the present one, attempts to show how the different ideas were generated about the concept of pleasure and displeasure related to the consumption of opium, morphine and cocaine. The dual use and destination of drugs is demostrated over a wide spectrum of documents ranging form the writings of Thomas de Quincey with his exaltation of opium up to medical texts describing the therapeutical use of the different compounds.
