The Valencian naturalist Antonio José Cavanilles was one of the most important botanists of his time. His botanical formation took place in Paris. There he got in contact and conflict with his contemporaries. A few years after his return to Spain he was appointed as director of The Royal Botanical Gardens (Madrid), where he carried out an intense institutional role. The article also comments on the work he was doing up to his death, Hortus Regius Matritensis.
