Documents kept in the Archivo General de Palacio and Archivo del Museo de Ciencias Naturales demonstrate that a painting of a giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) in the Museo is a portrait of an animal that was sent in 1776 from Argentine to King Carlos III. This painting was produced in the studio of Anton Rafael Mengs.
