The author makes a detailed study of a cholera epidemic in Guadaloupe in 1865-1866, with particular emphasis on the diagnostic error which made cholera into a pernicious fever, an error endorsed by some of the doctors with responsibility for health matters. The paper emphasizes the real political impact of the medicine and the fact that the senior medical authorities in the French colony were conscious of their power but were not willing to use it as a counter-force in the complex interactions of the colonial power play.
