Abstract

History of technology in Spain has had little standing as an autonomous discipline and has, at times, become a “province” of other historiographical fields. Despite the existence of hundreds of high-quality studies, it remains a discipline that has yet to be fully institutionalized. Moreover, general historiography tends to pay little attention to research in the history of technology, due to the persistence of instrumental views of technology. This article aims to illustrate, through the history of technical professions and energy history, both the robustness of the history of technology and its potential contributions to general historiography in Spain. The article outlines a trajectory that accounts for the current state of research, ranging from the history and sociology of technical professions to the history of infrastructures and large technological systems, maintenance, everyday use of technology, and the representations and imaginaries of technology.
