The Cancer Pavilion. The beginnings of the fight against cancer in Alicante (1927-1953)

Through a critical exercise of local history, we define the elements that determined how cancer was socially and culturally constructed during the first half of the 20th century. The analysis of political, media and scientific agents and their interaction to shape the Cancer Pavilion of the Provincial Hospital of Alicante, allow us to study a project aimed at combating a disease that was emerging as a new social scourge at that historical context. To this end, we emphasize the role played by two of the physicians who developed their professional careers linked to an emerging specialty, radiology, essential for understanding the configuration of the disease in the period studied.
