The first spanish version of De revolutionibus orbium caelestium· Juan Cedilla Díaz (1620-1625)

The present publication reveals the existence of an unpublished manuscript which is to be found in the National Library in Madrid under the catalogue number Ms-9091. This volume includes the work Ydea Astronómica de la Fábrica del Mundo y movimiento de los cuerpos celestes, by Juan Cedillo Díaz, Senior Cosmographer of the Consejo de Indias and Professor of Mathematics at the Court from 1611 until 1625. The study of this work shows that it is an almost literal translation of the text of Nicolas Copernicus, De Revolutionibus Orbium Caelestium (1543), Nuremberg. It is, therefore, the first known Spanish translation (even though it is incomplete, since the last two books of the five of which the original work consists are missing) and even the first in Europe, according to the information which the authors have been able to gather.
