The present paper aims to be an approach to the problem of prostitution during the second half of the 19th century in Spain. We provide a text by the Sevillian hygienist, Manuel Pizarro Jiménez (1821-1892), on his «discurso doctrinal» to obtain his second doctorate in Medicine. Likewise, we discuss his attitude towards prostitution, as far as he was an abolitionist and defender of the rewarded reformation in light of his own social and personal conditions. We also provide a critical catalogue of his printed works, as well as other documents related to his doctorate.
