Jason y los argonautas: temporalidad, usabilidad y conocimiento tácito en el monitoreo oceánico de Argo

El sistema de monitoreo marino Argo, inaugurado en 1999, proporciona un continuo de datos recopilados en una cuadrícula global por un ejército de 4.000 boyas auto-flotantes que se sumergen de forma automática y salen a la superficie para enviar la información vía satélite. Según sus promotores, se trata de un nuevo modo de hacer oceanografía: la posibilidad del monitoreo constante permite construir modelos de cambio a nivel global. La visión que Argo proporciona de la variabilidad de mares y océanos complementa la del satélite Jason y otros en el objetivo de producir estimaciones del estado del medio marino y sus transformaciones. Para cumplir su objetivo, las boyas y los datos que producen tienen que cumplir los requisitos de durabilidad, usabilidad y fiabilidad. Este artículo analiza el papel del conocimiento tácito o experiencial en garantizar estos requisitos. En concreto, los científicos que actúan como expertos de Argo combinan un conocimiento de los sensores, de las boyas y del medio marino que les prepara para identificar anomalías de un modo difícil de automatizar. Estudiar el papel del conocimiento tácito en un contexto aparentemente muy alejado del conocimiento artesanal permite evaluar hasta qué punto las infraestructuras de durabilidad, usabilidad y fiabilidad de Argo producen un nuevo tipo de océano y un nuevo estilo de hacer oceanografía y hasta qué punto mantienen estructuras epistemológicas preexistentes.
